The Yacht

SAFIRA – Steel hull displacement expedition ice-class charter yacht. Built by Newcastle Marine, she is a true global explorer with an ice-strengthened steel hull, eco-friendly features and an owner who is planning to offer itineraries everywhere from Iceland to the South Pacific.

Safira is powered by Schottel Rudder Propeller Azipod drives that are 20 percent more efficient than conventional shafts. Her 660-bhp Caterpillar C32 Accert engines can run on 15 percent biodiesel fuel, and energy-efficient electrical specs allow for smaller generators that also reduce fuel burn. Safira has a range of 8,000 miles when cruising at 8.5 knots. Even the 25-foot Hunt Harrier tender is fuel efficient, burning just 9 gph at 30 knots.

Continuing the eco-friendly theme, Safira’s decks, which look like teak, are built with Esthec, a composite Dutch product that also provides sound insulation for lower decks. Safira also has a GPS-enabled Quantum Zero dynamic positioning system that lets her stay in place without dropping anchor on sensitive coral or other fragile eco-systems.

Safira accommodates 10 guests in five cabins, including a full-beam master suite that Burgess says is “located deliberately belowdecks amidships, the position of least movement onboard.” The company then makes reference to countless other competing charter yachts whose master suites are forward on the main deck, calling Safira’s traditional alternative “perfect for those who prefer staterooms for sleeping rather than admiring the views.”
